Increase in burglaries around Paphos

andy5m

How concerned are you about the rise in burglaries in and around Paphos / Peyia
in recent years? Do you feel the police will be able to stop it, or is it set to only get worse?

I would say that it is no different to other countries ... take all the precautions that you can to secure your property, dont advertise your absence on social media. be vigilant and observant of what is going on around you for yours and your neighbours safety and security

most of the burglaries are tourist trap holiday villas, where its obvious easy killings for burglars... cash, small electronics passports jewellery,  - made all the more obvious by their red plated (hired) cars not being on their drives.  - these scumbags are watching these properties regularly and are not scared or put off by anyone being at home

As for the police they are under-resourced and under-funded and do as good a job as they can..... in respect of Peyia it would help greatly if Mr Mayor would actually help to get the neighbourhood watch up and running quickly instead of using lame excuses to not do so. The wealth and prosperity of Peyia and Coral Bay relies on it... The old NHW was working fine but it really needed assistance and support from the Municipality.

it will get worse if people do not take this surge in crime seriously... sadly most of the burglaries happen to tourists in well known tourist accommodation areas and that is not good for the "heavily dependant on tourism" businesses here...

I for one hope never to be subject to this type of invasion but the odds are getting shorter each day

According to the Cyprus Mail, some suspects' homes were raided,
and weapons found inside. The worrying part is that break-ins are occurring
even with residents at home, and retired residents at that.

Limassol, with more wealth and business connections, has it even worse,
from what I've read.

Just wondered if people think crime has worsened since this question was asked originally?

I've been on a few Cyprus Facebook groups recently and it sounds like things are getting worse anyway.

Toon

From my perspective having lived for the last 8 years in various locations in the area I dont think it is any worse that in it was when we arrived...  I still believe most are targeted tourist properties...

Toon

If it has then I suggest that it may well be related to people being desperate due to covid lockdowns and work restrictions... especially as peyia and coral bay are tourist reliant areas, many venues are restricted in numbers thus dont need as many staff...  not a lot of assistance for those finding themselves out of work, many may well be illegally here having overstayed and not being able to get an urgent immigration appointment ...  If that is the case then I would expect some improvement when the covid pandemic restrictions get lifted - lets hope so...

Don't believe a word on Facebook until you've verified it.

This is where you'll get a good idea

Always start with drugs because that fuels other crime

Ref to break-in's burglaries

Gangs do seem to be operating around Paphos

This is something of a concern IMO and makes many properties either for rent/purchase a no no

Trio arrested in Paphos for nearly €1 million theft

Are the gangs locals or illegal  immigrants, is there a problem with illegal immigrants in Cyprus

Toon

There has been a slight increase but it's nowhere near the level of crime in other countries ..Cyprus is still one of the safest countries to live... What is pretty clear to me having lived here for over 10 years and especially in tourist resort areas including it's immediate surrounding areas is that some areas of  tourist accommodation especially villas tend to be targeted much more often ..

Gordon76

I would like to know the outcome of recent arrests please

plus who the offenders were and where they came from

Gordon76

Can anyone please post a link to recent prison sentences imposed upon burglary offenders

Are the authorities currently building any new prisons ?

I get the Tala ..news email daily and that contains lots of details regarding arrests and court proceedings. It covers a lot more than just Tala in respect of crime. I don't think I can paste the link here so search for it. Most of what I see is strong police and court action for all offences.

Prisons here are not as harsh as you might think ..I saw a documentary on prisons in Cyprus and it looked like a holiday camp....I would be happy for anyone to advise otherwise

I have lived here (Eastern Province) for over 9 years. Back door always stays open if I am out or in for the dog (a big hunter). Yes will agree with Toon on of the safest country to live in but lately have seen a spate of  crime mainly through TCN's in the Western & Central areas. Must say some of us are spoilt here in Cyprus. However, all, please be careful.
