Tricare Global for D7

Joythumper

Hi all! My question is: does anyone know or have experience with using Tricare Select Overseas as on option for the health care requirement of the D7 visa? My mom and our best friend both have Tricare (from the us military) and according to their website they would be able to swap over to a global plan. According to them it’s an option for health care in any country. I haven’t found anything on anyone using them as an option. Thanks in advance.

Hi Joythumper,

You should find out more about it, but from what I've seen it's not suitable for the D7...

TRICARE Prime Overseas:

- is a managed care option in overseas areas near US military hospitals and clinics. For example, in Portugal, this applies to Lages US Air Base in the Azores islands.

- is available to active duty service members and their command-sponsored family members living together in non-remote overseas locations. Retired service members and their families can't enroll.

You will need to purchase a Travel Insurance with Health Coverage for one year. This health insurance must be part of the documentation for D7 visa to be submitted to the Portuguese Consulate in USA.

(post #9, this is for non EU countries)

The one my mom has is Tricare for life.  It says it is good for all overseas locations. So again, I’m unsure.

When I look up providers for Tricare for life it does show several in Lisbon.

I had already noticed that. But it probably has to do with NATO/OTAN base in Carcavelos/Oeiras, near Lisbon:

Two of the hospitals that appear on that search list as Tricare Providers are these:

I am using Tricare Select Overseas (retired) now that I am in Portugal, but also obtained a health insurance policy in Portugal for my residency submission to the SEF. I was advised to also obtain the Portugal policy to avoid any potential issues with the residency application.
