Private health care

maryhawley

I am 69 years old, and in process to receive my Portuguese passport. I currently reside in San Francisco. My attorney tells me that I should purchase health insurance before I turn 70 which is in a year. Can anyone advise on the best private healthcare plan or provider?

HI Mary,

you should review Cigna's offer

/en/insurance/europe/portugal/

They're currently offering a lifetime -20% discount, which is super interesting

Hope this helps

@maryhawley,

MGEN is a good option in Portugal for people over 70. This insurance company has no age limit. You can get a quote here:

As JohnnyPT writes, MGEN is a good solution if you want a health insurance that covers you in Portugal. However, If you would want to choose where you want to receive treatment (if required) then only an international insurance like (!) BUPA will work. I guess it all depends upon your requirements and how deep your pockets are. I know people that don't have health insurance, but simply pay their treatment out of pocket.

We have CUF, a leading healthcare provider providing high-quality private healthcare services in Portugal.  They were recommended to us and can be located online here:  cuf.pt/en. We have since found them friendly, responsive and supportive.

We are using CUF as well, because they have a hospital in our nearest town and many in Lisbon. However, CUF does not provide health insurance. They only provide a health plan. I assume JohnnyPT can describe the difference much better than I can.
