Relocation to Philippines

pacer

Dear all,
I am planning to relocate to the Phils. I am Swiss currently based in Hong Kong.
Relocation to Phils is not as easy as I thought and thus I am seeking some advise from anyone who has moved to the Phils before.
The big issue I have is the relocation of my personal effects. As I read many expats are staying in the Phils just on a tourist visa but this has customs implications on the import of personal effects. The customs duties are huge.
Has anyone ever moved their personal belongings to the Phils without an investor's visa, a retirement visa and not being married to a Philippine citizen? Is there any way around these fees.
Furthermore if anyone has any good references for a relocation company I'd highly appreciate that.
I thank you for any information and experiences anyone might be able to share with me on this topic.

Hi there! How much of personal belongings are you talking about? Please PM me the details so we can help you properly, unless you prefer to get your information out in the open, that's fine too. I will send you two relocation companies who are both International but are based here in Manila.

Dear Pinaymentor,

Thank you for your information provided. From quotes that I got from intl. relocation companies the estimate is approx. 580 cuft, although I believe the actual should be lower (500 cuft).
I would appreciate if you could advise the contacts of the local relocation companies.
Thanks again.

Hi - I am just new in the PH and trying to bring a few boxes of personal stuff here. Total value CAD 443 which is around P17500. A recommended broker now calculated P210000 duties and taxes. No I did not add too many zeros, this is indeed what they came back with.

When talking to the shipping line, they seem to be uncooperative to help with a broker suggestion. I thought I could do this myself with customs like in Canada but that was a mistake I made.

Any suggestions you can offer in Davao?

Dang!  There trying to steal your stuff it seems... if they price it too high they know you'll abandon it.

That sounds crazy. How big are the boxes?

Welcome to the forum.

Have you tried the Balakbayan shipping route?

We sent a 20 ft shipping container packed back to front/floor to ceiling from Australia to Manila and the forwarders then shipped from there 7 hours north to our home, unloaded our belongings from the container to where directed and went away, no duties or taxes and all up was around P 350K for over 1,000 cubic feet.

Our shipping company in Oz had their sister companies in the Philippines as brokers and forwarders and no problems.

No customs/taxes would have been because my better half living and working in Oz as a permanent resident for over 6 years (not an OFW) lowered the hurdles as a returning Filipino.

I would shop around for a one stop company that handles the whole deal,,,,,, been there with other companies that are cheaper but only get it to Manila and then to are on your own.

From memory, try OSS world wide movers who are aligned with 4 winds forwarders and though at the time seemed expensive was seamless and they were very professional and a pleasure to deal with.

Good luck.

Cheers, Steve.
