Spain, a welcoming destination to expats?

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Settling in Spain, like every new environment, can feel like stepping into the unknown and brings many questions: how will it go, how to integrate successfully, etc.
To help smooth this transition, we invite you to share your experience since you landed in Spain, whether recently or a long ago:

What was your first impression when you arrived?

Did you face any challenges while integrating? Any advice on how to overcome them?

Are there any support programs, groups or events to help newcomers settle in?

Do you find it easy to make friends or connections with locals and fellow expats?

What makes Spain a welcoming destination for expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

My wife and I first visited Spain, specifically Barcelona in August 2023. We loved the whole vibe of Spain. We started to look for a home, not in a major city and by a beach. We found a townhouse in Daimus about a mile from the beach. We liked being away from the beach front condos. We finally made an offer, which was accepted. Then we visited the townhouse in May 2024 and everything was satisfactory. We signed the purchase contract and our attorney handled the closing at the Notary's office for use on 12 December.  We then arrived at the houser ourselves on 19 December. We were shocked at the condition of the house. Dirty, smelly (both owners smoke and two dogs had the run of the place) appliances that didn't work or were too gross to keep, furniture and rugs that had to be thrown away because of smoke and dog smells. Trash and odd items left in a shed (including a camp toilet that had not been emptied). I have since found out that according to our Spanish attorney Spain has no requirements such as "broom clean" or any other standard. We have had the house thoroughly cleaned, hired a dumpster to trash what was not usable, and will purchase replacements for furniture, rugs, and appliances. The big lessons are: 1. have your attorney stipulate in the contract the condition to be maintained in the house. 2. inspect the house again just prior to the closing.  3. Do not expect the agent who lists the property to help you with any of this. Inspite of all that we love Spain and still love the house.  Just be sure to verify everything right before the final purchase.
