Dog Ownership in Malta

Carol Chase McElheney

If we move, we will be bringing three large dogs. What are the ins and outs of dog ownership in Malta? How many and what quality are veterinarians in Malta? Is there a vet school? Training? FCI dog shows? Pet friendly rentals?

University and college do have vet courses.  In general it's hard to get quality vet care here - especially out of hours - things are a bit traditional and they don't tend to know all the breeds which isnt a surprise given the size of the place.

It can be difficult here with dogs, many rentals won't allow, most dont have gardens, beaches aren't dog friendly, you end up having to travel to the dog parks which are just flea infested.

Pet sitters are hard to find and only recently kind of regulated.

I do not think people love dogs over here. Here are many councils that put high fines on people who allow their dogs to mess up a place and do not clean after them. If I were a dog owner I would surely avoid Malta altogether.

I know several British people with dogs here in Gozo and they are happy with the

vets here and find places they can walk their dogs, mostly are in rental properties.

Yeah, agree with Gozo vets, if at all possible I wait to take my dog to the vet in Victoria rather than any in Malta
