Quarantine for pet bird in Dominican Republic

muggo

Greetings:

My husband and I are planning to visit the Dominican Republic shortly with our pet parrot.  We are familiarizing ourselves with all the governmental regulations and find that quarantine is mandatory.

Can anyone tell us what the quarantine facility is like?  Our bird is very social and needs human interaction.  I am worried that he might get just the basics--feeding and cage cleaning, but not attention.  I am imagining that the more likely resident of quarantine would be birds like poultry that do not need that type of attention.

I have reached out directly to this government department, but have not yet gotten a response.

I hope someone here may be able to provide me with some information or a contact person.

Thank you,

Leslie

I haven't heard of any facilities but if an option for you I would find care for your little one in yiur home country while you are in the DR. I don't want to be negative but with a parrot anything can go wrong here. Good luck!

Check out the resources on this thread from a couple of years ago.  I have no idea if any of it is current or applicable.

As per the old thread they are not issuing permits to import birds.

Be prepared that your bird may not fully enjoy the DR if it doesn’t know how to curse in spanish.

Leslie - you say you are coming for a "visit", which sounds temporary. I would not put any animal through relocation and quarantine unless it is a permanent move. Hopefully, you can find a trusted family member or friend to watch over your parrot while you're away.
