Updates on club Jet Set

planner

As most should know, club Jet Set in Santo Domingo was the scene of a horrific tragedy.  It was an upscale, very popular club.

Current death toll now sits at 230.

The fall out from this is considerable.

The city has gone very quiet.  Most clubs are closed. Most colmados are quiet in respect of those gone.  Easter week is expected to be quiet without most of it's loud boisterous celebrations.

Apparently Airlines in their greed raised flight costs in anticipation of those needing to attend funerals.

Many professionals here, have lost close friends and family.  If you are waiting on responses please be patient and understanding!!!

And please do not engage in spreading rumors or supposition around what happened!!!! Unless you are an engineer with specialized education and first hand knowledge, just keep it to yourself.

I pass on my condolences to the families of the victims.  Those that are recovering, I truly wish they will be able to recover as quickly as possible and the scars will be healed over time.

Yes, we should respect the dead and wounded, but if we wish to discuss, you should not tell us what we can say unless there there is some kind of rules that says we cant discuss it.

This is a tragedy, but lets face it, those those attending the club on this night were able to get tickets  because they were rich or famous and that includes those in high in military positions /government and the corrupt legal system.

Here is a gift link to a New York Times article on some of the people who were either there or had friends there. They don't seem like high elites, more like people united by a love of music and dance.

I hope sharing this link is OK.

Rumor an innuendo will not be tolerated. IF YOU CANNOT BACK IT UP WITH FACTS I WILL REMOVE IT.

Like this comment:  This is a tragedy, but lets face it, those those attending the club on this night were able to get tickets  because they were rich or famous and that includes those in high in military positions /government and the corrupt legal system.

That is blatantly untrue. Anyone  could buy tickets. ONLY the VIP tickets required a lot of money or influence.

I know several people who were there and they are neither rich nor powerful, they simply loved Ruby Perez. I had considered going to the concert and I am not rich or powerful!

@wondering9

Interesting article, thanks for sharing.

My sincere condolences to the families of the victims

This is very disrespectful! Even if this statement were true, which @Planner has firsthand knowledge that it is not, you are insinuating that the loss of rich and famous lives is somehow not a concern. That is shameful.

@Planner - I hope your friends were among the survivors. I cannot even imagine the trauma associated with just being there and witnessing the tragedy. My heart goes out to all of the families of the victims as well as to the survivors, their families, and the first responders.

Such a tragedy.  I visit the DR every year and I know this is affecting everyone.

My heart felt condolences to all who have lost family and friends.

Some of you dont like what I said so now you attack me, saying I am shameful and disrespectful.  That is is ok with you.   Every single life is important and I care about all the Dominican people, especially the children.

There are over 11 million Dominican residents here, and not many of them can get into a club like this.  How remarkable that Gov Cruz was there and had direct access to President Abinader to call him soon after it happened (and later lost her life).   Maybe as a result, she was able to save some lives for her actions so her death was not in vain.

Reported by CNN:

Almost immediately after the roof caved in, Gov. Cruz called President Abinader – while she was trapped under the rubble – to alert him of the tragedy, according to First Lady Raquel Arbaje.

“The president started mobilizing all the organizations” to send help right after the call, she said.

planner

It's not correct to say you are shameful etc.  Your comments could be construed that way, not you.

So now you have confused us.  It's bad that all 11 million people can't get into Jet Set yet it's good the governor could or it's bad that she was there?   Is it bad someone with direct access to the president was there and maybe saved lives?

Every club every restaurant every store has a market!  Suggesting one is bad due to their market is neither fair nor appropriate.

The loss is horrific, period!  Let's move on and respect those affected in any way.  In addition let's all hope that there will be an increased importance placed on inspections and licensing requirements.

Papito NL

My stepdaughter frequented Jet Set in past years, a friend of her was there that night and didn’t survive. With a normal job they were able to go there. Yes it was a hangout for the rich and important but not limited to that.

More important in the news is the negligence that led to this disaster and who is responsible. This disaster will become a painful example of how safety is handled in the DR.

ddmcghee

@Papito NL

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure this has been very painful for your stepdaughter.

I know that there has been a lot of speculation about what happened, but I haven't seen any definite reports that negligence was a factor. Have I missed an update?

planner

There are no official statements as of yet on the cause or causes!

I am very sorry for your step daughters loss!

Papito NL

Thanks. The official report is expected in 3 months. However there is a lot to find in DR media, when you filter through speculation and facts you can get a good idea of the possible causes.

Since these are not official I would not post them here.

planner

Exactly.  Speculation is easy!  Let's wait for the facts.

Dewayne Stevens

@planner

Thanks for the update all we hear is speculation here.

I for one am VERY glad you did not go!! Sending my love and energy to the families of the fallen!
