I would visit Krakatoa on an eruption day before going back to Kuta...... unless I was being paid a lot of money to visit.

Too many bogan bule.

Aha, Fred adds Australians to his list of international insultees: "Bogans" (Australian rednecks). I looked it up.

"Things bogans like include (but are not limited to):

Mullets

Wife beater (singlets)

Footy

The simple life while living the Australian dream. If they are a rich bogan, they might have a custom home.

Often overweight but proud of your “Rig”

Enjoy holidays in Bali

Drives a Holden or a Ford

Has a kelpie, blue heeler or a staffie

Enjoya a smoko break (smoke break) at work followed by an ice coffee

Refer to all your friends names with a “za” e.g. Bazza (Barry), Lazza (Larry) etc"

I never realized that Bali was just a cheap tourist destination for Australian bogans lol. What a letdown, Bali is supposed to be world class.

OK, Dazza.

I will clarify before Roy shouts at me (again - he nags more than my wife 🤣).

The reason I hated Bali was the bogans that brought with them everything that I left England to get away from.

I've seen old photos - it looked lovely in the pre-bogan past.

PalawOne

`

Yes, chaps, as an Aussie, one wouldn't visit Bali again now.

A real pity. It was a really charming place, but it's certainly changed, more so after a terrorist night-club bombing there killed 202 young Aussies.

Quote: "On the 12th October 2002, a suicide bomber inside the nightclub Paddy's Pub detonated a bomb in his backpack. The organization suspected of responsibility for the bombing was Jemaah Islamiyah, an Islamist group allegedly led by radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir."

The lead local bomb-planner was released from an Indonesian jail in 2022 for good behaviour after serving half of his sentence

Bali became, and still is, an end-of-year-schoolies drinking destination. With $200 air-flights. Now, give me truly beautiful and peaceful Palawan any time.

However, an elderly granny non-drinker still loves Bali, so who am I to judge?

What about the Daily Mail reading ‘Chavs’?

They tend to be slightly better behaved, but write a lot of stiff letters to the editor when they get home and sober up.

bigpearl

Bogans and rednecks aside I have visited 7 of the destinations on your list P1 as well as dozens of others not on the list and honestly Malta and islands for me hits the lop of the list though very happy with Luzon as an island of the Philippines.

A recommendation also goes out to the South Island of NZ, spectacular but can be cold.

Cheers, Steve.

And they still think the world owes them respect. Our bogans work their buts off all year, then holiday in Bali just as hard for a week or two, drinking everything in sight, and then, laughing in-your-face, want to piss off the uppity whinging poms haha!

It's an Aussie social tradition. Seems they got you good Fred?

Apologies for how they treated you. You're not an uppity pom!

mugtech

        I really like the islands of the Caribbean listed plus St Martins. St Thomas, Aruba, and the one with the Dominican Republic.. Prefer to avoid Haiti.  Surprised none of the Hawaiian Islands are listed, very expensive but very beautiful.

Cherryann01

The only one I have visited on your list is Corfu, guess I prefer a faster pace of life since I am fairly well travelled.

Whilst flicking through the TV Channels last week I came across a programme called Amazing Hotels - Life Beyond The Lobby which in this episode was about Joali, an island in the Maldives. It is presented by Monica Galetti and Rob Rinder and they try their hand at various jobs on the island looking after the guests and also take a look at the resort staff accommodation and facilities. I was glad to see that the staff seemed to be well treated with good accommodation and many facilities including staff to cook their meals in the restaurant, a bar, gym, swimming pool and their own laundry facilities amongst others. They also have staff there to arrange Birthday Parties for the staff although the parties are not individual but monthly so any staff born in January share a party. The staff also had a trip to another island and have their own beach to enjoy when not working. It seemed to be a very nice set up for guests and staff.

I will be back in the Philippines next month mostly in and around Cebu but have booked a 5 day trip to Bohol so if anybody has any recommendations for things to do in Bohol, it would be much appreciated. I am also stopping off in Hong Kong for 4 nights on my way to the Philippines. I decided on Hong Kong simply because there is a direct flight from Manchester to Hong Kong, a direct flight from Hong Kong to Cebu and my return trip from Cebu to Manchester has just one stop, via Hong Kong again.

bigpearl

Faster life Cherry? Go to Pa Tong, they will keep you busy and entertained, My better half after many shots off a lovely ladies breast ended up shirtless pole dancing on the bar,,,,,,, we had a good time, can be wild if your'e into it. A nice beach also, bit like here.

Cheers, Steve.

        Visited via a Princess cruise ship, beautiful spot, best Hindu place I ever visited.

bigpearl

Where was that mugtech and how many days did you spend there?

Just spent 8 hours, did not get too far away from the dock, found a great beach.

Cherryann01

@bigpearl

Not that sort of faster life haha, prefer to see the sights, maybe take a day tour in Bohol, see the Chocolate Hills etc and maybe a bit of ziplining or a boat trip down the river and some snorkeling. If i want to see plenty ot tits, I just have to go into Bradford and see all the drunken idiots when the pubs kick out.

Lotus Eater

@mugtech

Indeed a beautiful island with mystical flavours.

Have only visited once with my Indonesian GF. Stayed at a boutique hotel in Ubud.

But sure there are plenty of red necks there Lotus. Like an infection with no cure.

OMO.

           Evidently all Bogan are rednecks, but not all rednecks are Brogan.

PalawOne

Anyway ..

Regarding Palawan .. plenty to see here:

And sometimes also here:

Happy trails 😉

bigpearl

Love Palawan P1, had a great time there and will probably be back, trouble for me is I find it a little isolated and also prefer bigger islands to explore. Even Luzon is not that big compared to Oz or the US but has plenty of destinations from north to south like Palawan.

I suppose the other thing that plays into it is family proximity, a happy partner equals a happy life. Main thing is to be happy where ever you choose to live.

Cheers, Steve.

mugtech

        Cyprus is a fun place to visit, the Greek/Turk DMZ is a mellow place, but no pictures allowed.  The locals were very excited in 2018 while we were there and VP Biden visited.  Mostly meaningless.

bigpearl

Not been there yet mugtech, Turkey is on my bucket list and we almost got there 10/12 years ago but restrained by time and schedules, hope to get there eventually, as mentioned Malta and its main 2 islands are worth visit if any cruises are going that way, a week is plenty though. Japan is the next trip if the better half ever gets off the the rump and sorts out a visa,,,,,, waiting for a year now,,,,,, perhaps I go it alone.

Cheers, Steve.

Cherryann01

@bigpearl

Japan is well worth visiting. Went there about 13 years ago but only for about 10 days. I actually booked the trip through a French Travel Agency online and over the phone. They asked me where I wanted to go in Japan, made suggestions and tailored the trip to my requirements including a 7 day Japanese Rail pass and a couple of sightseeing  tours in Tokyo and Kyoto and a stay near Mt Fuji. They also made suggestions on places to visit and sent me my own personalised itinerary. Loved the food, the people and everywhere I visited especially Kyoto.

mugtech

         Looking forward to spending two days in Tokyo and then making three cruise stops in northern Japan on the way to  Seattle.  Nine straight days at sea will be the most I ever experienced, a few days less than my dad's trip from SF to New Guinea care of the 25th division in 1944.

bigpearl

Never been on a cruise mugtech, maybe one day but spent plenty of time filming on the ocean 14 to 16 hours a day and sea sick when back on land,,,,,, well the land was bucking, fun days, dad was in the army and did the tour in Japan with the occupational forces after WW2 and many interesting stories, some embellished I'm sure.

From all I have read and fiends visiting is a destination I hope to make, Turkey the same, getting older these days and seem to travel far less than I used to, why leave paradise? Suppose we are all different. happy travels on your cruise, enjoy.

Cheers, Steve.

@mugtech

When I visited Japan about 13 years ago I found it to be fairly inexpensive for tourists compared to the UK. Entrance fees for the attractions like Tokyo and Kyoto Towers and the Temples were much cheaper than entrance fees to the top attractions in London. Food and transport costs were reasonably priced and  everything was clean even though there were not many bins around apart from outside the 7/11's and attractions. I was told that owning property and renting in Tokyo was very expensive and all the suits lived outside the city and commuted to work each day. I also liked the fact that there were vending machines on the streets so you could grab a cold drink.

mugtech

       Just found out the yen, which was at 156 per US dollar in January, is down to 140 yen per US dollar as of today.  In related news found out our cruise will be cutting one port in Japan, spending 3 extra hours in the first two ports.  As a result we will be doing 10 straight sea days from Japan to Seattle, which includes crossing the International Date Line, giving us two May 5ths.

Lotus Eater

@mugtech

£ sterling is way up against the greenback but in a recent poll 14% of Brits say they have altered their travel plans to the USA.

Presumably by the laws of chance someone on that cruise mugtech is in for a double celebration!

If Mugtech's good lady was born on 5 May - does that mean two birthdays, extra presents, 2 cakes, etc haha.

I only say this because 5 May would have been my wedding anniversary if still married.

mugtech

        The USA invented a Mexican holiday known as Cinco de Mayo, so perhaps a lot of drinking will be happening two days in a row.
