Can anyone suggest the easiest and cheapest way to transfer money from my Western bank into my ABA account?

I would use MoneyGram. It's supported by ABA. Money will transfer directly into your ABA account. I do this often. It takes a few hours for the transfer. Just setup a MoneyGram account. Then select the transfer from debit card and select ABA as destination. Done.

The easiest way for myself was to have a PayPal account linked to my US account. I can use the PayPal international transfer service Xoom (which in turn uses Ria Money Transfer) to 'send' money to myself from my US account to pick up in Cambodia. You get a numeric code in an email and information on banks where you can go to receive your cash; or just put the code in your ABA app (Transfers>International Transfers>Ria Money Transfer) to deposit in your ABA account.

I was told this process by an Austrian who did this to transfer cash from their Austrian bank.

You can check potential fees on the Xoom website.

Be careful using Xoom if you don't use ria tracking number within ABA. If you go to the bank and show your US passport and transfer to yourself you will see Xoom does not list a middle name for Cambodian transfers while your passport does. This has caused repeated issues for me with ABA bank and others. While Xoom is faster, you will pay more for transfers.

The first time I used Xoom I went to the bank for pick-up and they were completely confused by the transfer. Eventually one of the people at the counter pointed out where I could input the tracking number in the ABA app, so problem solved. So yeah, Xoom or Ria money transfer is highly NOT recommended unless you have the ABA app.

I have problems even with the xoom app. Here has been the problem in Cambodia. The paypal app requires periodic logins and trying to login from cambodia has been a problem for me. So I set fingerprint access to paypal. Then xoom forgot the account it was associated with. This happened changing phones from iphone to android for me. It took me awhile to get it figured. I had to use VPN to login to paypal first and then xoom. It works well and its fast when it all works. To me, there are too many moving parts to really trust it. MoneyGram just works without all that. It may take longer but I have this premiere status now so transfers are cheaper. No matter what, if you transfer over 2k you will pay. The other solution is Western Union. I have done this before but mostly to Khmer friends that needed assistance. I think best thing is to find the way that works and try to stay with it. My wife likes xoom because the money comes in fast. I don't trust paypal at all. So for regular transfers from the US to Cambodia I use moneygram. On average it takes 2 hours to be credited to my aba account. Then I'm done. Its worthwhile to try things and see what works best.
